“FEARLESS 5K” AND “FEARLESS GARDENS” DEDICATION
IDS BRINGS BACK ITS “FEARLESS 5K” AND UNVEILS THE “FEARLESS GARDENS” DEDICATION
The Independent Day School (IDS) will once again host a 5K Race, Walk, and Fun Run on Saturday, October 28th on the school grounds. The Fearless 5K, a long-standing tradition at the Middlefield school, which educates students ages 3 to Grade 8, has been on hiatus since 2020 due to Covid restrictions. The race will start at 9:45 am with a special “fun run” for youngsters, followed by runners at 10:00 am. Once the runners are off, walkers will follow the same route with a 5K walk. All participants are encouraged to arrive as early as 8:30 am in order to check in and pick up their race T-shirts. Complimentary breakfast items will be provided by the Dunkin’ Batista Companies.
Following the race, at approximately 11:30 am, there will be a special ribbon cutting ceremony with assistance from the Middlesex County Chamber of Commerce as members of the IDS community dedicate the “Fearless Gardens”, ten new raised beds in which students will grow plants and vegetables in a school-wide initiative on Environmental Literacy. This initiative is funded through generous “Call-to-the-Heart” donors at last year’s auction.
“In my second year as Head of School at IDS, I can already feel synergy across all stakeholders, students, teachers, and parents alike,” said Dr. Rochelle Reodica. “Having a special day to host the Fearless 5K as well as to dedicate our raised beds shows our school’s connection with nature and commitment to being good stewards of the environment.”
After the ribbon cutting, IDS will host a BBQ with hamburgers, veggie burgers, and hot dogs for the community to enjoy.
“The return of the Fearless 5K is not only great for the current members of the school community, but it is also great for our alumni to come back and visit their alma mater,” said Charlie Mitchell, a longtime faculty member who is helping to develop a new Alumni Association at the school. “I hope I will be able to catch up with as many former students as possible to not only see how they are doing, but to also introduce them to the newest generation of Fearless Learners.”
