The Lower Connecticut River Valley Council of Governments (RiverCOG) is seeking a clear headed, self-directed planning professional. RiverCOG has diverse responsibilities including: land use planning, transportation planning, land conservation, economic development, and emergency planning.
RiverCOG is currently seeking candidates to support two agency programs:
RiverCOG is the host agency of the Connecticut River Gateway Commission, a regulatory commission responsible for protecting the “unique scenic, ecological, scientific and historic value” of the Connecticut River and the adjacent lands. The Commission works cooperatively with eight towns in the lower river valley to ensure that land uses protect this unique and important asset. RiverCOG is seeking a Regional Planner to staff the Commission and support them in their work. The ideal candidate will have experience and familiarity with the municipal land use regulatory process, viewsheds, and mitigating ecological impacts of development. Staff would be responsible for supporting the Commission’s work, including conducting site visits and meeting with applicants.
RiverCOG also serves as the fiduciary of Connecticut Division of Emergency Management and Homeland Security (DEMHS) Region 2. We are seeking a Regional Planner who would be responsible for supporting those fiduciary functions, reporting to the DEMHS Region 2 Regional Emergency Planning Team, and supporting RiverCOG member municipalities in interactions with DEMHS. The ideal candidate would be well organized, have interest in emergency preparedness and planning, and be a quick study.
For both tasks, the candidates will be replacing retiring staff who will be available to provide hands on training. RiverCOG encourages candidates to apply who have relevant experience and the aptitude to learn to take on either or both tasks.
In addition to the Connecticut River Gateway Commission and DEMHS Region 2 work, the Regional Planner would work on other agency planning projects including developing plans, studies, and regional services under the COG’s regional planning and transportation planning programs.
The Regional Planner position requires a Master’s degree in city or regional planning or related field and one year of planning experience or a Bachelor’s degree in city or regional planning or related field and three years of planning experience. Aptitude to take on new responsibilities and learn new roles will be key to this position. CAZEO membership is desirable. Valid driver’s license and own transportation also required. A hybrid remote/in-person work week is possible.
This position may be filled at a salary of up to $60,000 per year depending on qualifications. Applicants with more experience may apply to this position as a senior planner at a higher salary commensurate with experience. RiverCOG has a 35-hour flexible work week, health and dental insurance, 401a retirement and 457 deferred compensation plans, life insurance, disability insurance and paid leave time.
